A Bit Of History
Winnebago was founded in the late 1950s by John K. Hanson, who wanted to
improve the economy of his town, Forest City, Iowa. Hanson, with the help
of local community leaders, encouraged a California travel trailer
manufacturer to set up shop in his town. In 1960, the factory was renamed
Winnebago Industries after the Iowa county it was founded in, which in
turn stemmed from an exonym applied to the regional Ho-Chunk tribe.
After Hanson and five other entrepreneurs bought the company, they started
to manufacture furniture specific to their Winnebago trailers. In 1966,
the first Winnebago motorhome rolled off the assembly lines and soon
became an icon of the RV industry thanks to its unique stylings and
competitive pricing. Winnebago motorhomes were, in general, about half as
costly as similar models made by competitors, so customers flocked to them
for the sheer bargain. Over the next few decades, Winnebago became
synonymous with “motorhome,” as they expanded their lines and created more
unique RV styles to meet customers’ expectations. Winnebago trailers and
RVs remain a popular choice with campers all over the world.
